Stuart Florida is a city in Martin County; in fact, it is the County Seat of Martin County. It is located in the area known as Florida’s Treasure Coast, along the St. Lucie River, and has an estimated population of 15,964 as of 2007.
In the 1700s, several Spanish galleons were shipwrecked in the Martin County area, reportedly due to a hurricane. These ships were carrying unknown quantities of silver and gold, some of which has been recovered. This is how the area got its nickname, the Treasure Coast of Florida.
Stuart is a quaint waterfront area which has several restaurants, ice cream parlors, boutiques, and galleries. Stuart is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World. There is a beautiful bronze statue of a Sailfish surrounded by fountains for all to enjoy, especially at night when you enter the riverfront area.
